Reap It Again and Again! Is It Rice or Chives?

In recent years, Xinping County has introduced perennial rice to be planted in suitable areas. Farmers can harvest rice for two to three years with only one planting and without complicated production processes. This means that soil erosion and labor input can be reduced while ensuring food production. Recently, a field observation meeting on perennial rice was held at Manxiuxinzhai Village, Gasa of Xinping County, Yunnan Province. A number of experts and technicians from a range of locations learned in detail about the cultivation and management techniques of perennial rice. They discussed issues such as irrigation, fertilization, and field management with the farmers in comparison to the cultivation of common rice. The differences in cultivation and management between perennial rice and common rice were emphasized. Zhang Shilai, Research Associate, School of Agriculture, Yunnan University said that perennial rice has greatly liberated the productive forces and is a new way to simplify rice production. In simple terms, like chives or sugar cane, perennial rice could be harvested each year after planting. The perennial rice is mainly re-grown through shoots on the ground, just like the seedlings grown from seeds, so its growth period and yield are no different from the newly planted seedlings. There are abundant solar and thermal resources at Mosha, Gasa, Shuitang and other places in Xinping County, all of which provide ideal natural conditions for rice. Source: Yuxi Online
