The Chengjiang World Natural Heritage Fossil Site is the only world heritage fossil site in Asia. It is known as “one of the most amazing scientific discoveries of the 20th century.” The heritage site is located in Chengjiang City, Yuxi in Yunnan Province and covers an area of 5.12 square kilometers. Since Professor Hou Xianguang discovered Chengjiang Biota on July 1st, 1984, more than 280 species of Cambrian rare animal and plant fossils in 20 phyla have been discovered, of which 80% are new species. Almost all the ancestors of living animals can be found here. As a result the Chengjiang fossil site is praised as the “Holy Land of Paleontology” and a “World-class Fossil Treasure” by the international scientific community. On July 1st, 2012, at the 36th World Heritage Conference, the Chengjiang Fossil Site was added to the World Heritage List. Construction on the Chengjiang Fossil Site Natural Museum began in 2014. On August 3rd, more than 100 mu (6.7 hectares) of sunflowers and verbena hybrida near the Central Yunnan Botanical Garden in Gaocang Sub-district of Hongta District were in blossom. The floral spectacle attracted a large number of tourists who strolled the garden taking photos.
