Jiangchuan District is situated in the east of central Yunnan, bordering Huaning to the east, Tonghai to the south, Hongta District to the west, and Jinning and Chengjiang to the north. It is 100 kilometers from the provincial capital Kunming and 21 kilometers from the urban area of Yuxi City. The total area is 850 square kilometers, accounting for 2.16% of the province. Jiangchuan District governs 1 sub-district, 4 towns and 2 townships, 76 villages (communities) and 472 village (residents) groups. The district has a resident population of 284,800.
Jiangchuan is a district with a long history and rich culture, as well as abundant resources. Xingyun Lake occupies an area of 34.33 square kilometers with an average depth of 7 meters and reserves of 210 million cubic meters of water. Jiangchuan boasts excellent water conservancy conditions, fertile land and various crops. It has been awarded "the First Quality of Flue-cured Tobacco in China" with "108 points". Its Bullhead Fish and Anti-wave Fish (Schizothorax Taliensis) are famous far and wide. Jiangchuan is known as "the Jade of Central Yunnan", "a Water Hometown on the Plateau", "a Land of Fish and Rice" and "the Land of Yunnan Tobacco". Lijiashan Bronze Culture, represented by the Cattle-tiger Bronze Table, is the treasure of the ancient Dian culture. Jiangchuan is a land that has nurtured many famous talents, including Qu Huanzhang, the inventor of Yunnan Baiyao, Tang Huaiyuan, a general who fought bravely against the Japanese invasion, Jin Handing, the acting general commander of the Yunnan army, and Lu Zicai, the general who was highly complimented by Mr. Sun Yisen. In 2019, Jiangchuan's GDP reached RMB 13.39 billion, an increase of 10.3%. Per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents reached RMB 39,766 and RMB 14,688, an increase of 8.5% and 10.6% respectively.
