Ailao Mountain is the largest mountain range in the western region of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The plants here, with the world's rare mid-mountain wet evergreen broad-leaved primitive forest as the main forest type, are also praised by botanists as a bright "emerald" in the crown of Yunnan plant kingdom, and a rare giant "green reservoir" in the world today. Scenic spots include Nanen River Waterfall, Longxi Clan Manor, Shimen Gorge, Tea Horse Road and other scenic spots.

With the opening of China-Laos Railway, Yuxi further strengthens the construction of cultural and tourism infrastructure, continuously releases the tourism dividend, and injects new vitality into the local economic development along the route.

On December 8, the 10th Yunnan-Taiwan Green Food Industry Exchange and Cooperation Matchmaking Meeting was held in Yuxi, co-sponsored by the Taiwan Affairs Office of Yunnan Provincial Government and Yuxi Municipal Government, with the theme of "Yuxi join hands with Taiwan to create a better Future", to renew friendship, discuss cooperation and seek common development.

In March 2021, Tonghai officially became the seventh National Historical and Cultural City in Yunnan Province, the first and only one in Yuxi. This national honor gives us a broader, three-dimensional view of Tonghai, reassessing the depth of its history over thousands of years. On November 28, Yuanjiang County of Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, China and Vang Vieng County of Vientiane Province, Laos, held an online meeting and signed a letter of intent for development of sister city relationship. The signing of this letter of intent marks that the bridge of win-win cooperation between Yuanjiang County and Vang Vieng County has been built, and the two will take further exchanges and cooperation in the future.

From January to October 2022, a total of 43 foreign trade enterprises in Tonghai County achieved a total import and export of 171 million US dollars, among which 169,000 tons of vegetables were exported with a total value of 103 million US dollars. Since the China-Laos Railway was opened to traffic on December 3, 2021, Tonghai County has continuously optimized the mode of transportation and overcome difficulties by making full use of the China-Laos railway, and its foreign trade economy has been steadily improving.
