The residence is located on No.3 Beimenjie Street in Hongta District. It is a two-floor architecture in Qing Dynasty style. The national anthem composer Nie’er lived and studied here in his childhood. The house was built by Nie’er’s grandfather Nie Liandeng in the late Qing Dynasty. Nie’er’s father Nie Hongyi inherited the house and lived here for a long time.

In the year of Guangxu 28 (1902), Nie’er’s father went to Kunming with his wife for medical practice and Nie’er was born in 1912. Nie’er came back many times to visit relatives in Yuxi and left many memories in the house.

Today, Nie’er has become an important part of Yuxi and symbols and his name can be seen in many places. The city now has the Nie’er Cultural Square, the Nie’er Park, the Nie’er Library, the Nie’er Primary School, the Nie’er Choir and the Nie’er Concert Hall. His music talent has become the soul of Yuxi, distinguishing Yuxi from other cities.
