Brief description of the project

On September 28, 1998, Yuanjiang County Fish Species Technical Promotion Station brought estuarine crocodile into experimental breeding and succeeded in August 2003. In 2005, 200 baby crocodiles were put into farming and about 90.5% survived. In 2012, 345 baby crocodiles were born with artificial breeding, and in 2013, the number grew to 445, which marked the maturity of cultivation and breeding techniques. In 2014, the number of cultivation reached 1,800 in an area of 74 mu. About 45 mu will be extended for cultivation with 2,000 square meters of hatchery under complete temperature control and 6,600 square meters of pond and temperature-controlled canopy for baby crocodiles. Egg-laying zone will be extended as well. Baby crocodiles do not attack people or livestock, so they can be cultivated by nearby farmers to help increase local villagers’ income. By doing so, it can build a crocodile industrial zone with crocodile breeding, sightseeing, restaurants, and processing of crocodile products. The construction will take one year.

Construction basis

The project follows the Overall Planning of Yuanjiang County Tourism Development and development strategy of the county.

Construction conditions

Construction stone, sand, gravel, and lime can be supplied locally. Steel can be purchased in Yuxi and directly from iron and steel companies.

Supply of major materials and supplementary materials, and labor force

Stone, sand, gravel, and lime: there are many suppliers nearby providing high-quality materials and the transportation distance is short.

Concrete: there are many concrete factories in the county and nearby.

Steel: Steel can be purchased in Yuxi or directly from iron and steel companies.

Supplementary materials: the project site is three kilometers north of the county, the supply of power, water, and communication is in place.

Labor force: Employment is handy and the price is around 15,000 to 25,000 per year.

Preparation and progress

The Technical Station has 15 years of experience in cultivating and breeding crocodiles. It now occupies 31 mu with egg-laying pond, hatchery, newly-born pond, baby crocodile pond, adult crocodile pond, canopy. The station is qualified for breeding aquatic wildlife and operating for commercial purpose.

Impact on environment

Breeding produces no pollution. The water from breeding can be used for irrigation of nearby farm fields. Processing and restaurant operation can produce waste water, gas, solid waste and noise.

Initial analysis of economic benefits

Crocodile breeding requires small investment with quick yield of return and remarkable profits. Twenty or above female crocodile group, calculating by 40 baby crocodiles from each adult female each year, can breed about 800 baby crocodiles each year. Adult crocodile is sold at 30,000 to 60,000 yuan each at domestic market. Crocodile meat is sold at 200 yuan per 500 grams in coastal area such as Guangdong Province. Dried products are sold at 400 yuan per 500 grams. Processed crocodile skin is sold at 2 to 8 US dollars per square centimeter at the international market. Other parts of the crocodile such as head, paw, and teeth can be processed into souvenirs. Its glands, gallbladder, and fats can be used in making anti-cancer medicines. In recent years, the need for crocodile leather is still increasing and the crocodile breeding has a bright future.
