Maotianshan Scientific Knowledge Dancing with Art
In the 1830 s, Darwin predicted it in his famous book "The Origin of Species" that if someone ever challenged his theory, it would be very likely to come from explanations of the sudden appearance of Cambrian animals.
From 1984 to 1994, over 50 paleontologists from more than 10 countries, came to Chengjiang Maotianshan region and collected about 50000 fossils, and so far, more than 80 kinds of animal fossils have been found here and files of more than 40 kinds of fossils have been set up.
Zhang Handong, an artist and professor, has been focusing on inheritance of national culture for decades, until he met fossils from Maotianshan. Zhang Handong’s idea of creating art works in a way that shows the theme of the fossil began from 2013, under the advocacy of the CPC Yuxi Municipal Committee and Municipal Government. That year, he led hundreds of college teachers and students spending two months to create a number of fossil art works, including ceramics, painting, wood carving, cloth art, etc. These works were exhibited in the municipal museum and caused a strong reaction. Themed at “ Art of Maotianshan, Knowledge of Cambrian”, this exhibition successfully brought Maotianshan fossils into Yuxi people’s life, with shrimp patterns manual necklace, the grandeur of the undersea world on comics , various ancient creature on carving works...... This time scientific knowledge was dancing on platforms with different arts and crafts. Countless children lined up for hours at the event, just to wait for a wooden board of a bug from the Cambrian printed on.
The practice of "The Art of Maotianshan" is carried on further and further in municipal museum. Those Cambrian bugs now appear on works of wood carving, pottery, china and embroidery etc. The museum even made cards, CDs and stamp albums regarding those fossils as small gifts for tourists to get to know Maotianshan.
