Yunnan Chengjiang Fossil Site Natural Museum Is Expected to Open for a Trail at the End of This Year
Cambrian is a special geological period, known as “the beginning of the explosion of life”. A large number of Cambrian animal fossils which were discovered in Chengjiang County, Yuxi Municipality, Yunnan Province, in 1984 opened a window on the evolution of life on earth during the Cambrian explosion for the international scientific society. The abundant and exquisitely preserved fossils of Chengjiang Fauna are examples of the most concentrated in distribution and the most completed in preserve, which completely reproduces the colorful marine community about 518 million years ago. The Chengjiang Fossil Site was listed as a world natural heritage in 2012. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the discovery of Chengjiang Fauna.
In 2014, Yuxi began to build Chengjiang Fossil Site Natural Museum. The museum occupies an area of 42,000 square meters with a total investment of RMB 630 million yuan. The museum is a large natural museum for collection, research, display and education, explaining the origin of life, the evolution of life and biodiversity with fossils as the theme.
The museum displays more than 3,000 precious biological fossils and specimens from all over the world and in various geological periods, and advanced technological means such as AR, VR, intelligent somatosensory interaction and multimedia digitalization technology to build a first-class base for scientific research, science education and tourism in China.
