The quiet and limpid Lugu Lake, is the second deepest in Yunnan, lies farther north in the municipality. Lugu Lake covers an area of 48.45 square kilometers. Around the lake, there are more than 20 villages inhabited by the Mosuo people, a branch of the Naxis. Mosuo people live in log cabins. Mosuo Nationality is a matriarchal tribe that property and children belong to the women who run the market and control the purse strings. They refer to their canoes as ˇ°mangers for raising pigsˇ±. Legend goes that their ancestors were busy with feeding the pigs when the flood flew to them, thus they leaped into the manger and escaped by an ark of their own.
Lugu Lake is 5.2 kilometers wide from east to west with an average depth of 40 meters. With trough-shaped canoes, crystal- clear waters confined by verdant mountains, three islands are in the lake. There are peninsulas, cape, smooth beaches and the old-fashioned Mosuo log cabins by the lake. The matriarchal customs of Mosuo people and their friendliness are indeed enchanting.
