History

  On 1st January 1950, Central Yunnan Administrative Commission was established. In March of 1950, it was renamed Yuxi Prefectural Administrations, jurisdicting Yuxi, Kunyang, Jinning, Chengjiang, Chenggong, Jiangchuan, Huaning, Tonghai, Hexi, Eshan, Yimen, Xinping (12 counties). In 1951, Eshan County was renamed Eshan Yi Autonomous District. In 1954, Yuanjiang County, which belonged to Mengzi Prefecture, joined Yuxi Prefectural Administrations. In 1956, Eshan Yi Autonomous District was renamed Yi Autonomous County. In 1960, Jinning County (including Kunyang and Chenggong) joined Kunming Municipality. In December 1970, Xinping County was renamed Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County. Yuanjiang County was renamed Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County. In August 1983, Yuxi County was renamed Yuxi City (county level).

   On June 28, 1998, Yuxi Prefectural Administrations was upgraded as Yuxi Municipality. The newly elected government constitution presented a new working style before its people. Yuxi Municipality has under its jurisdiction one district and eight counties, namely, Hongta District, Jiangchuan County, Chengjiang County, Tonghai County, Huaning County, Yimen County, Eshan Yi Autonomous County, Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County, Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County.
