The Longmashan Mountain |
| £ £ Located in the northeast of
Hongta District, this scenic region comprises the Longma Palace, the
Longmujing River, the Longma Stone Town, the 999-step Heavenly Ladder,
the Bullring, the Game Land, the Race Course, the White Dragon Pond,
the White Dragon Temple, and the Dongfeng Reservoir. The scenic region
consists mainly of natural scenes which are breathtaking and grandiose,
and is inhabited mainly by the honest and energetic Yi Nationality.
Visitors will find it difficult to tear themselves away from the Yi
Nationality. The White Dragon Spring gushes out from the cliff of the White Dragon Valley and runs down like a real white dragon surging in water. The local people are familiar with the legends about White Dragon King and Goddess Yuan. The forest covers an area of over 300 mu (20 hectares), and is like a fairy land, peaceful and quiet. The White Dragon Spring winds its way to the White Dragon Palace where it divides into two streams. One runs along the valley in the west and joins the Yuxi River, the other winds its way upwards, forming a wonderful phenomenon of flowing upwards. It is said the latter was dug by White Dragon King while riding his horse along this route. |
The Dongfeng Reservoir |
| £ £ Dongfeng Reservoir, previously
called New Dongfeng Lake, was built during 1958-1960. This big reservoir
covers a runoff area of over 300 kilometers and its water is of high
quality. The beautiful and charming mountains are the paradise of
various birds. The unique Water Sports Center offers various kinds
of water entertainment. Nowadays, Dongfeng Reservoir is provided with
new entertainment facilities for the children |
The Nine-dragon Pond |
| £ £ This scenic region is located
in the northwest of Hongta District and comprises the Nine-dragon
Pond, the Feijing Lake, the Yellow Grassland, Gaogu Pavilion, the
Jiejin Temple, Baishui Memorial Archway, the Li¡¯s Mansion and the
Ten-thousand-lotus Park. The Nine-dragon Pond is located at the foot of Qilishan Mountain in the northwest of Hongta District. It was built in the Ming Dynasty and some buildings which make it perfect were rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. The pure clean springs and the graceful old trees form an organic whole. The Peals Spring, the Quiet Spring and the Malong Spring in the south of the scenic region supply people with adequate water. The Nine-dragon Palace, the Whispering-spring Building, the Grand Building, the Avalokites Hall, the Three-saint Hall, the Scholar Pavilion and the Wusi Temple were built through taking the geographical features into consideration. The wonderful hills and winding roads will render visitors much scholarly thinking. It is a cultural relic under the protection of Yunnan Provincial Government and the Dictionary of Famous Chinese Scenic Spots has an entry about it. |
The Gaogu Pavilion |
| £ £ Gaogu Pavilion, originally named Fuyuan Pavilion, was built in the Yuan Dynasty and rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. Since it was built, Yuxi began to appear more Jingshi (successful candidates in the highest imperial examination). Thus the Yuxi people have a great attachment to this building. The ballad goes: ¡°Gaogu Pavilion is in my hometown Yuxi; it rises up into the sky; we go to worship it on the first day of the month and will not come back until the fifteenth. While looking up at it, I have history run into my mind.¡± It reflects the importance of the Gaogu Pavilion in people¡¯s heart. |
Dayingjie Village |
| £ £ This scenic region is located in the southwest of Hongta District and includes the following scenic spots: Dayingjie Village, Yuquan Temple, Yuquan Lake, Huilong Ecological Park, Yingyuetan Hot Spring Restore, Black Dragon Pond, Hongta Industry Area, Gaocang Flower Nursery, and Bajiaoyuan Villa. Dayingjie Village reveals the town construction with a modern and ethnic style. Huixi Park embodies the combination of traditional ethnic cultures and modern thinking. The Yuquan Temple is a grand Buddhist temple with a holy and solemn style. Yingyuetan Hot Spring offers 28 different kinds of Hot-spring Bath with their own charming style. Huilong Ecological Park offers entertainments such as swimming, water-skiing, and grass-skiing. The well-known Roast Duck of Dayingjie Village offers visitors an opportunity to taste Yuxi Specialty, and the new buildings of Dayingjie Village make visitors feel the modern town and its educational, scientific and cultural achievement. |
Dayingjie Village |
| £ £ The well-known Dayingjie Village is called the First Village of Yunnan. It has a population of over 4,000 people with a total annual income of RMB 1.7 billion. The Filter Paper Mill and the Cigarette Filter Factory are the industrial foundation of this modern town. A private business zone, a business center and the branch of Yuxi No.1 Middle School has been founded here. The newly-built roads, charming parks, and colorful lamp poles which bring no night here reveal great vitality and unity. |
The Yuquan Temple |
| £ £ Covering an area of 60 mu, this temple comprises the Grand Hall, the Master-pharmacist Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, the Hall of Fortune God, the Founder Hall, and the Five-hundred Buddha¡¯s Hall. The carved statue of Sakyamuni in a sitting position is made of sandalwood and is 32 meters high, ranking as the first indoor Buddha in Asia. The nirvana moment of Sakyamuni is found in this sleeping Sakyamuni, which is made of Burmese white marble and sixteen tons in weight. |

be more charming than you could imagine. Gold-like Hongta District can be more prosperous than you could hear! No one can forget its unique natural beauties and pleasant climate. The holy springs, delicate ponds, wonderful Karst caves, the magnificent Hongta Hill and Gaogu Pavilion and jade-like streams form an imposing picture of natural beauty. The co-existence of different nationalities such as Han, Yi, Hui, Bai, and Hani is an irresistible cultural attraction. Xinxing Zhou was the previous administrative unit and memorable name in Yuxi history. After the founding of New China, Yuxi County was established and then Yuxi City which functioned as a county. In 1998, Yuxi Prefecture was changed into Yuxi Municipality and Yuxi City into Hongta District. Hongta District now is the political, economic and cultural center and the site of the Party, Army and administrative institutions of Yuxi municipality. It covers an area of 1004km2 with a total population of 382,000. Its favorable ecological conditions benefit people to produce high-quality tobacco, thus ¡°the Home of Yunnan Tobacco¡±. Being diligent and hard-working, the ethnic groups here have their own splendid cultures, and are good at singing and dancing, thus ¡°the Hometown of Huadeng Opera¡±. It is also the hometown of Mr. Nie¡¯er, people¡¯s musician who composed the National Anthem of the People¡¯s Republic of China. It offers convenient transportation because it enjoys a geographical vantage. It is located at the hub of the ¡°Three-Lake-One-Mountain¡± tourist route of Yuxi, on the passageway from Kunming to the scenic spots in Southern Asia. Adjacent to Kunming it is a bright pearl in the tourist development of Central Yunnan. Hongta Golden Tourist Route consists of all the highlights of tourism in Yuxi Municipality and offers a new chapter and forms an important part of Yunnan tourism with rich and refined cultural connotations. The Home of Yunnan
Tobacco |
| £ £ According to history records
and recent research, China is one of the origins of tobacco. People
began to plant and apply tobacco over one thousand years ago. Yunnan
is the hometown of Chinese tobacco. It began to plant American tobacco
in 1914, soon after the world tobacco industry came into being. In
1939, a kind of tobacco called ¡°Jinyuan¡± from America was successfully
planted in China. In 1953, the International Tobacco Conference was
held in Xuchang of Henan Province. At the conference, Yunnan tobacco
was highly applauded for its golden color, fragrant aroma, mild effect
and pure taste. From then on, tobacco has been planted in Yunnan on
a large scale. And Yunnan is reputed as ¡°the Hometown of Yunnan tobacco¡±
for its excellent quality. Yunnan tobacco is a raw material for the
tobacco industry in Yunnan. In addition, it has been exported and
also applied as ingredients for the tobacco industry within the rest
of China. Yuxi Municipality is a key base of Yunnan flue-cured tobacco and cigarette production with its favorable conditions, such as temperature, sunshine, water and soil for tobacco growth. With its increasing production, Yuxi Cigarette Factory has been the largest backbone industry as well as the principal income industry of Yunnan Province. At the same time it plays an important role in the national tobacco industry. It has maintained its first positions in the aspects of the number of famous brands, total output, sales volume, position of market, export exchange earning, tariff and facilities and technology. In 1995, the amount of flue-cured tobacco made up 1/3 of the total and tariff made up 1/2 of the total national tobacco industry. Therefore, Yuxi is entitled ¡°the Kingdom of Tobacco¡±. |
Hongta Tobacco Group

| £ £ Hongta Tobacco Group Ltd uses the Red Tower as
its symbol. The famous Yuxi Cigarette Factory ranks the first in Asia
and the third in the world among its peers and is regarded as a symbol
of China¡¯s industry. In December 2001, ¡°Hongtashan¡± once again ranked
first among the valuable and famous brands in China, the seventh time
in this successive competition with a brand value of RMB 460 billion.
Along the Hongta-industry-oriented Tourist Route, the magnificent
Office Building of Hongta Group Ltd, Science and Technology Building,
the modernized Cut-tobacco Production Lines, the Eco-forest Parkland,
and the Tobacco Museum are still under construction. All this forms
the center of Chinese tobacco culture, the most modernized charming
scenic spot in Yuxi Municipality. |
