In 2004, culture course developed vigorously. Nie¡¯er Music Foundation was established. Besides, Yuxi participated in the activity for China Glamor Cities. Moreover, China Yuxi Orchid Fair was held successfully. Television networks and broadcasting covered 98.69% and 98.1% of the municipality respectively.
Health £ £
The public hygienic system was enforced. The experimental reform to new rural cooperation medicare made great progress.
Environment Protection £ £
Environment protection and ecological construction made great progress. Since the Second Municipal Congress of Chinese Communist Party, the CPC Yuxi Municipal Committee and Yuxi Municipal People¡¯s Government had decided to build Yuxi into an ecological city. A series of measures had been taken to improve on the water quality of Fuxian Lake. An important project was implemented smoothly, which would change the flowing direction of Xingyun Lake and the water from Fuxian Lake would replace the water in Xingyun Lake. The Gehe Filter Dam Project for getting ride of blue green algae was put into use. £ £
All motor boats in Fuxian Lake were forbidden to go into the lake. It was estimated that RMB 0.968 billion would be invested for the eight projects relating to the Fuxian Lake. The water quality of Fuxian Lake recovered to the first class. Urban Construction £ £
With the paces of urban construction quickened, city functions became more perfect. According to the statistics, the areas of the central city and the county seats reached 47.8 kilometers in the whole municipality. The roads reached 320 kilometers in cities and towns, with an area of 6.38 million kilometers. The public grassland amounted to 551 hectares. There were 17859 streetlights. To enhance the social safety net, various reform measures were taken. By the end of 2004, 26772 organizations (including individuals) joined the pension system. 44000 persons joined the system for the insurance of job injury and bearing. RMB 45.42 million was given to the unemployed and RMB 3.64 million was given to the injured. RMB 2.87 million was given to the persons who give birth. 30000 enjoyed the lowest urban living standards, with 16531 households benefited and RMB 25.91 million spent. £ £
In 2004, 228000 persons were employed in cities and towns, increased by 2.0% over the previous year. The registered unemployment rate was 2.7%. 83.1% of the unemployed 8388 reemployed.
