The Miao people from the South and Northeast of Yunnan hold their Huashan Festival on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month every year.
The Miao people was once said to be defeated and forced to leave their home in ancient time, which made them think of their ancestors who had suffered from fleeing home. One year on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, the theophany of their ancestors gave them strength and confidence. They sang, danced and played instruments in a circle round a tree on which there was a flower coming from the heaven. In that year, they got a good harvest.
Since then, Miao people dress up and plant a flower tree on a mountain on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month every year. They hold lots of activities such as antiphony, performing Lusheng Dance (accompanied by a kind of music instrument ), performing bull fighting and Lion Dance, and climbing the pole. Among all the activities, the most striking one is Pole Climbing: he who climbs the highest will get a pig head and high-quality alcohol as awards.
