Chuxiong Yi Nationality Autonomous Prefecture is between Dianchi Lake beside Kunming and Erhai Lake in Dali.  It's an important hub of central Yunnan. Chengkun Railway, Guangda Railway and Kun-Wan Road are crossing it.

    It is one of the well-known birthplace of humanity and a treasure house of ancient fossils. The fossils of lama, ancient ape of Lufeng about 80 million years ago, "Yuanmou Man" about 17 million years ago and Lufeng dinosaurs of 1.8 billion years ago were excavated here. Many archaeologists from home and abroad regard Chuxiong Prefecture as the cradle of humanity and “the home of ancient living beings”.  Huge Mallet White Tower of Dayao built in the Tang Dynasty has a rare shape in Chinese ancient buildings. The large bronze statue of Confucius at Wenmiao Temple in Shiyang Town is the only one that is well preserved in mainland China.

    Wuding Lion Mountain is abrupt but beautiful. Colorful Yuanmou Earth Forest is an important scenic spot in Yunnan. The traditional festivals of the Yi Nationality here are colorful and rich in cultural content.  There are the Third Month Festival and the Torch Festival. The Torch Festival is annually held on 24th day in lunar June for a duration of three days. At that time, every villager are singing and dancing and all villages are ablaze with torches.
